Cupar Cricket Club Junior Section

Season 2007 was a successful year for the juniors. Entered into the Fife Junior Cricket Association for the first time in five seasons the under 13’s & 15’s teams won half their league games with both teams reaching the quarter finals of the national cup.

Two juniors made a significant impact on the senior second XI team, Steve Bedford and Callum Walker both recording single figure bowling averages with Steve topping the Strathmore Union division 3 bowling averages.

Callum, Steve and Lois and Matthew Wilkinson all made the Fife squads. Over the winter Lois and Callum have secured a place in the Fife / Tayside squad. Lois, the second youngest player in the squad, played for the Scotland U16 girl’s team on a number of occasions and captained the team three times. At a mere thirteen years of age she gained a full Scotland Senior Women’s cap, becoming the youngest player ever to have done so, taking a wicket on debut, a second cap followed capping a remarkable season.

The club’s junior trophies for 2007 were:-  U18 Steve Bedford, who also won the second XI bowling prize,  U15 Callum Walker, U13 Ross Turner; U11 Michael McLaughlin, with Lois Wilkinson collecting a special achievement award.

This season we aim to field two teams, although many of last years younger players are now U15’s. We need to develop a new crop of U13 and have high hopes that the U15 team will exceed last year’s achievements.

Over the winter months indoor junior coaching has continued on a Saturday mornings. From the beginning of April we have been outside. We expect a number of juniors to feature in the senior second XI this season, with two pushing for a first XI place. The club hopes to continue with its work in local schools and progress both on and off the field in 2008.
